A car accident — even a minor one — leaves you shaken, sore, and unsure of what happens next. What you do after a car accident in those first few minutes, hours, and days shapes both your physical recovery and the strength of any insurance or legal claim you may need to file. Knowing the right steps to take is the single best way to protect yourself on every front.

This guide walks you through the ten steps every driver should take after a wreck, drawn from years of treating crash victims at our Louisville, Colorado practice. Follow them in order whenever possible.

Why these first steps matter

Adrenaline is a powerful natural painkiller. After a collision, your body floods with it — masking injuries that may not surface for hours, days, or even weeks. Low-speed rear-impact testing has shown that roughly 29% of people develop whiplash symptoms at speeds as low as 2.5 mph, and a 10 mph rear-end collision can generate up to 9 G’s of force on the neck.

Speed and visible damage are poor predictors of how injured you actually are. That is why the steps below matter — even if you feel fine.

1. Call the Police

Every collision should be reported, no matter how minor it appears. Even if both drivers want to handle it privately, calling the non-emergency line ensures there is an official record of the incident. Police reports are one of the strongest pieces of evidence an insurance adjuster will rely on, and trying to obtain one days later is far more difficult than calling at the scene.

2. Seek Medical Attention Immediately

If anyone is hurt or might be hurt, get medical help. Adrenaline will mask pain, so even drivers who feel uninjured should be evaluated. EMS at the scene, the emergency room, or a same-day visit with your primary care physician all work — what matters is that the visit is documented and that the documentation links your symptoms to the accident.

Delaying medical attention is one of the most common mistakes accident victims make. Insurance carriers routinely use that gap to argue that injuries were not actually caused by the crash.

3. Exchange Information With the Other Driver

Before leaving the scene, get the other driver’s full name, phone number, email, driver’s license number, license plate, and insurance information. Be courteous, but do not apologize or admit fault — even a sympathetic “I’m so sorry this happened” can later be used as an admission of liability.

4. Document the Scene With Photos and Video

Use your phone to capture every angle of the damage to all vehicles, the surrounding road conditions, traffic signs and signals, and any visible injuries. A short video walking the scene and narrating what happened while it is still fresh can be invaluable later. Adjusters and attorneys consistently rate scene photos as some of the most useful evidence in any claim.

5. Talk to Witnesses

If anyone saw the accident, ask whether they are willing to share what they observed. Take their full name and contact information, and — with their permission — record a brief audio or video statement on your phone. Witness recollections fade quickly, and securing a contemporaneous account can make the difference in a contested claim.

6. Report the Accident to Your Insurance Company

Once you have left the scene safely, contact your insurance carrier and report the accident. Have your photos, video, witness contacts, and police report number ready. Be factual and thorough — this conversation will likely be the first of many. If you are unsure whether something is relevant, mention it; your adjuster can decide what to use.

This is also the moment to ask about your MedPay coverage. Colorado law requires every auto policy to include a minimum of $5,000 in medical payments coverage unless you have signed it away. MedPay covers everyone in the vehicle regardless of fault and can be used immediately for chiropractic care, ER visits, ambulance transport, and more — with no deductibles or co-pays. Read more on our auto injury chiropractic page about how MedPay can fund your recovery.

7. Stay Vigilant for Delayed Symptoms

This is the step accident victims most often skip — and the one that costs them the most. Whiplash, soft-tissue injuries, concussions, and disc damage frequently take days or weeks to show up. Some symptoms can take a decade to surface as chronic problems if the underlying injury is never addressed.

Watch for any of the following in the days and weeks after your accident:

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Neck pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion
  • Back pain or tightness
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet
  • Dizziness, blurred vision, or ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Anxiety, irritability, or unexplained fatigue
  • Nausea or abdominal discomfort

If any of these appear, do not wait them out. The longer an injury goes untreated, the more likely it is to become permanent. (Related reading: the 5 most common neck injuries from a car accident.)

8. Keep an Organized File

Treat your accident as the legal and medical event it is. Create a single folder — physical or digital — that holds your police report, medical records, treatment receipts, mileage to and from appointments, insurance correspondence, repair estimates, and any time missed from work. Scanning everything to cloud storage gives you a backup if originals are lost.

9. Protect Your Legal Rights

If there is any dispute over fault, any injury that did not fully resolve, or any pressure from the other driver’s insurance company to settle quickly, talk to a personal injury attorney before signing anything. Most accident attorneys offer free consultations and only collect if your case settles. They can also help you understand the full value of your claim — including future medical care, lost wages, and pain and suffering — categories most accident victims dramatically underestimate on their own.

10. Choose a Trusted Chiropractor for Recovery

If aches, stiffness, or other symptoms appear in the days after your wreck, the right chiropractor after a car accident can dramatically shorten your recovery and document your injuries for any settlement claim. Chiropractic care after an auto accident helps reduce inflammation, restore range of motion, prevent scar tissue from setting in, and address the underlying nerve and spinal damage that often goes overlooked at the ER.

At Apex Chiropractic, we specialize in auto injury recovery using a layered approach:

We accept all auto policies and bill MedPay directly — meaning most patients begin treatment immediately with zero out-of-pocket cost.

What If My Symptoms Are Already Showing Up?

If you are reading this several days or weeks after your accident and the symptoms have arrived, you are still in a strong position to recover — but the window is closing. The first 24 to 72 hours after a collision is the “golden window” in which chiropractic intervention produces the best long-term outcomes. Beyond that, meaningful recovery is still very achievable, especially with the right treatment plan.

For accident victims dealing with concussion symptoms, fogginess, or memory issues, our traumatic brain injury treatment is also worth exploring. And if anxiety, sleep issues, or the emotional weight of the accident is interfering with your recovery, our natural anxiety, depression, and stress treatment addresses those as part of whole-body healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I see a chiropractor after a car accident?

The earlier the better — ideally within 24 to 72 hours. Soft-tissue inflammation peaks in the first 72 hours and is most responsive to treatment during that window. Beyond that, recovery is still possible but typically takes longer.

Do I need to feel pain to see a chiropractor after a wreck?

No. Many auto injuries — including whiplash and disc damage — are asymptomatic for days or weeks. A baseline exam after any collision is the safest move.

Will chiropractic care interfere with a legal case?

The opposite is true. Chiropractic documentation is one of the most useful records an attorney can use to substantiate the value of injury claims. Insurance companies and juries take treatment records seriously.

Does insurance cover chiropractic care after an accident?

In Colorado, MedPay covers chiropractic care with no deductible or co-pay, and applies regardless of fault. Apex Chiropractic accepts all auto policies and bills MedPay directly. Visit our auto injury chiropractic page for a full breakdown of how MedPay works in Colorado.
